Answering to a Higher Call

For the last several months I have been concentrating on my personal journey -- following where spirit guides me, and reviewing my history, as well as fine tuning my focus for the future. What my own soul has been bringing forward for me time and again is how important the force of my own free will is.

Everything that I have done, every choice that I have made has directed who I will become. Spirit has pointed out to me that, dozens of times a day, I have the choice of how I will respond to my life. I can ...

  • Choose to ignore the possibility of choice, which means that I will act out in whatever way my family has taught me.

  • Choose to react, taking a situation personally and magnifying my importance, as if only my needs count.

  • Devalue myself and believe I am of no importance and, like a leaf in the wind, be blown by the strongest energy around.

  • Live from my heart and realize that every situation has meaning. Every part of my life is of value and I can choose to respond with my full awareness.

It is an act of wisdom to know that there is something to learn in every experience. From this focus I realize that I am a force among the other forces in the world. Then I can choose to respond with the higher qualities that we are all capable of developing. I can speak from my heart, being respectful, truthful, reverent and willing to learn.

Life gives me opportunities many times a day to act from a deeper more authentic space. When I choose this higher call I am setting my intentions with my actions for who I would like to be in the future. When I act from fear I draw to me more fear and I create more fear in my own inner environment. When I act from wisdom and compassion I draw this force to me, as well as create this environment within myself.

We are all responsible for our focus and our choices. I like to think about this responsibility as being like a bank account. My energy and my actions are the currency and my focus is the belief that I am investing in. If I act from fear, pain, anger, I am increasing the investment in this reality. If I choose instead to act from the heart of compassion I am investing in that reality. Whatever I invest in is what I create in my life.

This does not mean that any of us are to suppress our emotions or ignore them. As a spiritual consultant and advisor I spend a great amount of time helping people to explore their beliefs. I also help them create safe containers for these explorations so that these old limiting and frequently painful feelings aren't dismantling their lives as quickly as they are creating it.

The bottom line -- every moment of every day we can choose the focus we shall act from in life. Indeed it is the next evolutionary spiritual step to become responsible for the focus of energy that we are feeding within ourselves and what we are giving out to the world.

The joy of all this is the realization that I can have a tremendous impact on my own reality. I am, after all, the outcome of all of my choices.
